IT’S NOW … AUGUST

IT’S NOW …

AUGUST

August is the eighth month of the Gregorian calendar.

August was seen by many past agrarian societies in the Northern Hemisphere as the start of the autumn and of the harvesting season.

AUGUST BIRTHFLOWER

The poppy and the gladiolus are both considered the birth flowers for August, representing strength of character, sincerity, generosity, natural grace, imagination and oblivion. Both flowers also signify remembrance with the red poppy worn as a mark of respect to those fallen in World War 1. The gladiolus also expresses infatuation, telling the receiver they pierce the heart.

AUGUST BIRTHSTONE

The birthstone for August is the rare peridot. The Egyptians mined peridot on the Island of Zebirget – now St Johns Island – in the Red Sea as early as the second century B.C. It was Cleopatra’s favourite gemstone. Peridot is said to bring the wearer good luck, peace and success especially if it is set in gold. It has also been used as an amulet to ward off evil.
