JELLY BEAN WITH KATE MIDDLETON’S FACE TO SELL ON EBAY

kate-middleton2

A couple enjoying a jar of jelly beans said they found a speckled jelly bean that looks like it has Kate Middleton’s face on it. Given that the royal wedding is only a few weeks away, they’re hoping to make a few pounds off it by selling it on the internet to a collector. They plan to sell the bean on eBay for 500 pounds, or about $817.

This has to be an opportunist at the height of wedding fever.

MORE BUMPER WISDOM

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.

Honk if you like peace and quiet.

Slogan of 105.9, the classic rock radio station in Chicago: "Of all the radio stations in Chicago . . . we're one of them."

If money can't buy happiness, I guess you'll just have to rent it.

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.

Famous last words: Don't unplug it; it will just take a moment to fix.

VINTAGE … JAMES AVATI COVER ARTIST

7028631

JAMES AVATI

Considered by some to be the "greatest cover artist of them all," Avati was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey in 1912. He was a Fifth Avenue department store window display designer, a soldier in World War II, and an illustrator for magazines such as Collier's and The Ladies' Home Journal before breaking into paperback illustration in 1948. He produced dozens of covers for New American Library, notably for the Signet (including many well-known works of American authors) and Bantam lines.

Medium: His realistic, often emotionally-charged paintings were based on photographs which he took himself, done in oil on prepared hardboard, heavily influenced, he claimed, by the films he saw as a youth.

Works include:

  • Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye by Horace McCoy (Signet, 1949)
  • Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood (Signet, 1952)
Come to the Cabaret, ol' chum, and check out a decidedly earthier Sally Bowles...
  • The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone by Tennessee Williams (Signet, 1952)

MOVIE TRIVIA … LAST CINEMA RELEASES

Oliver Reed  2000  Gladiator

gladiator-movie-poster-2000-1020189549

Synopsis:
Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Harris) decides to name victorious general Maximus (Crowe) his heir over the ruler's own son, the decadent Commodus (Phoenix). But Commodus manages to take over the Empire anyway. Maximus is betrayed, his family killed, and he is sold as a slave, eventually learning the ways of a gladiator. Then he returns to Rome to fight before the new Emperor and get his revenge. Last role for Reed (playing owner/trainer Proximo), who died during production. Unlike the cheesy Italian muscle epics of the early sixties this is swords, sandals, and killer beasts for a new generation, with a compelling hero in Crowe.

Last screen performance of Oliver Reed.

Edward G Robinson 1973  Soylent Green

soylent-green-movie-poster-1973-1020190982

Synopsis:
In the 21st Century, hard-boiled police detective Heston investigates a murder and discovers what soylent green--the people's principal food--is made of. Robinson's final film is a disappointing end to a great career. Its view of the future and of human nature is relentlessly dark. Don't watch it with kids.

Last screen performance of Edward G Robinson

Robert Shaw  1979  Avalanche Express

avalanche-express-movie-poster-1979-1020232843

Synopsis:
Marvin is a CIA agent who uses a defector (Shaw) to lure a scientist (Schell), specializing in biological warfare, aboard a European train. Marvin wants to eliminate Schell but all plans go awry when the snow begins to fall. Ineffective thriller. Director Robson's and actor Shaw's last film--much of Shaw's dialogue was dubbed due to his death before the film's soundtrack was completed. Based on a novel by Colin Forbes.

DRINKING HELPS MEMORY?

PD*27571887

Drinking to forget? Unfortunately alcohol can actually help you remember.

A new study from the Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research at The University of Texas at Austin says that getting drunk primes certain areas of our brain to learn and remember things more clearly.

Going to the bar, chatting with friends, eating certain foods and listening to certain kinds of music while drinking alcohol are rewarding and the brain learns this and holds on to the feeling, craving to experience it again.

Alcohol does diminish our ability to hold on to pieces of information like your colleague’s name, or the definition of a word, or where you parked your car this morning.

But our subconscious is learning and remembering too, and alcohol may actually increase our capacity to learn.
