Lerner and Loewe’s third Broadway musical and first hit was a fantasy about a Scottish town that reawakens for one day every century. On that particular day in the twentieth century, Brigadoon is discovered by two Americans, Tommy and Jeff. Tommy soon falls in love with Fiona, but when he learns the town’s secret he returns to New York. His love, however, proves so strong that he goes back to the highlands to join the somnolent community.

Lerner claimed that the story was motivated by his fondness for the works of James M. Barrie and his desire to write a musical with a Scottish setting. The production won praise for its atmospheric charm, its heather-scented score, and its choreography by Agnes de Mule (including a sword dance, a chase through the forest, and a funeral dance).
