LADDER

It makes sense that you shouldn’t walk under a ladder for safety’s sake, but superstition advises against it for other reasons. First, an open ladder forms a triangle, and triangles were once considered a symbol of life, so walking through that shape was considered tempting your fate. It is also thought that because it has three sides, the triangle symbolizes the Holy Trinity, and “breaking” it by entering the triangle is bad luck.

MITCH MILLER PASSES

MITCH MILLER

Mitch Miller, who helped shape musical tastes in the 1950s and early '60s as the head of the popular music division at Columbia Records and hosted the hit "Sing Along With Mitch" TV show in the early '60s while becoming one of the era's most commercially successful recording artists, has died. He was 99.

Miller died Saturday after a short illness at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said his daughter, Margaret Miller Reuther.

A show business icon with his trademark goatee and baton, Miller is considered one of the most influential producers in the history of recording.

He made a career switch from playing to producing in the late 1940s by becoming A&R (artists and repertoire) director at Mercury Records, a small label that he turned into a major force in the industry.

At Mercury, Miller nurtured the careers of such singers as Vic Damone, Patti Page and Frankie Laine.

Tom-Mankiewicz-

Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, who brought his dry wit to James Bond pics, thrillers and the Superman pics, died Saturday in Los Angeles of cancer. He was 68.

Mankiewicz wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for "Diamonds Are Forever," "Live and Let Die," "The Man With the Golden Gun," as well as TV's "Hart to Hart."

He started in showbiz as a production assistant in 1961 on Michael Curtiz's "The Comancheros," starring John Wayne, and was credited as a production associate on the bigscreen adaptation of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man," toplined by Henry Fonda in 1964.

Mankiewicz's breakout hit came with 1970's "Diamonds Are Forever." Producer Albert Broccoli had wanted a script that would lure Sean Connery back to playing James Bond. Connery returned and thus began Mankiewicz's long association with the iconic British spy, which also included uncredited work on "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Moonraker."

His reputation as a script doctor started when he was tapped to help rewrite "The Deep." He then helped director Richard Donner overhaul the scripts for "Superman" and "Superman II," leading to a Writers Guild credits dispute in which he prevailed.

Though he wasn't always credited, he contributed scenes to other films including "Gremlins," "Goonies," "WarGames," "Batman" and "Legal Eagles." He also wrote and co-produced Bill Cosby comedy "Mother, Jugs and Speed."

During the 1970s, Mankiewicz wrote or co-wrote screenplays for taut thrillers including "The Cassandra Crossing," starring Sophia Loren, and "The Eagle Has Landed," adapted from a Jack Higgins thriller and toplined by Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland.

A TOP ceilidh band will get the dancing started when Sir Sean Connery hits 80 next month.

Bowfire, one of the world's leading fiddling troupes, have been booked to perform at a special reception held in his honour in the Bahamas.

The actor only wanted 50 family and friends at the bash but no expense has been be spared. The lavish party will be held at a rented mansion near the former 007 star's home in Nassau.

Guests will be treated to champagne and canapes and a marquee will be erected in the garden of the opulent property.

And the highlight of the evening will be a show by the Canadian virtuoso violinists, who specialise in Celtic-themed music.

Arrangements are being made to fly the band to the Bahamas by Sir Sean's stepson Stephane.

Bowfire have played for the last two years at the Dressed to Kilt event which Sir Sean organises at Scotland Week in New York.

He has become a big fan of their music and his family decided to fly them over to play as a birthday treat.
