MOON OVER MIAMI - 1941

Director:  Walter Lang
Stars: Don Ameche, Betty Grable and Robert Cummings

SYNOPSIS:
The first of several remakes of 1938's Three Blind Mice, the Technicolor musical Moon Over Miami stars Betty Grable and Carole Landis as Kay and Susan Latimer, two Texas carhops who journey to Florida in search of a rich husband. The plan is to have Kay pose as a millionairess, while Barbara and the girls' Aunt Susan (Charlotte Greenwood) pretend to be Kay's domestic staff. The two most likely matrimonial candidates are Miami playboys Phil O'Neil (Don Ameche) and Jeffrey Bolton (Robert Cummings), but when Kay finds out Phil is broke, she reluctantly throws him over for Jeff. Happily, romance wins out over greed, and Kay is reunited with Phil-not that Jeff ends up empty-handed (guess who he gets?). The musical highlights include the hit tune "You Started Something" and an energetic dance specialty by the Condos Brothers.

ALEX STEINWEISS PASSES

1_alex_steinweiss_portrait

Alex Steinweiss, who invented the album cover in the late 1930s, taking what had been a monochromatic surface and making it visually appealing, died on Sunday aged 94, a gallery has confirmed

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1917, the son of immigrant parents from Warsaw and Riga, Steinweiss was hired in 1939 to design advertisements for Columbia Records.

But he quickly gravitated to creating album covers for the new long-playing 33 1/3 rpm records then coming into vogue.

"They were like tombstones," recalled Steinweiss in a 2007 interview, referring to the covers of the 1920s and 1930s.

"I got busy with management and said that RCA/Victor was the main competition and their work was old hat. I approached them with the idea that it could be more exciting and that it would actually boost sales, despite the increased cost of production."

Steinweiss's first album cover, for a Rogers and Hart collection of songs, featured a theatre marquee with the words: "Smash Song Hits by Rodgers & Hart".

first

Sales jumped 894 per cent, and a new genre, album cover art, was born.

During his 25-year career at Columbia, Steinweiss designed some 800 album covers.

His New York dealer William Acquavella said Freud had died after an illness but gave no further details. Freud, a grandson of the psycho-analyst Sigmund Freud, was born in Berlin in 1922 and came to Britain with his family in 1933, when he was 10.

Freud was particularly known for his paintings of nudes. His works have been increasingly sought after at recent auction and his painting of an overweight nude woman sleeping on a couch sold in 2008 for $33.6m (£20.6m). Mr Acquavella described Freud "as one of the great painters of the 20th Century".

"He lived to paint and painted until the day he died, far removed from the noise of the art world," he said.

“LOVE NEVER DIES” TO BE FILMED IN AUSTRALIA

love nevers dies

According to the NY Times, the continuation of Broadway's longest-running musical The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies might not make it to Broadway after all. When asked if the show has a future on the Great White Way, creator Andrew Lloyd Webber commented:"I think there are a lot of people who would love to see it go there, but I think that we're all realistic, and I think with the baggage that it's got, it might be better to just let it be discovered."

Additionally, he revealed that the Melbourne production, which is currently playing at the Regent Theatre, Melbourne, will be filmed and soon be available on DVD.

dream_house_poster

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for psychological thriller "Dream House". Giving a look at some of the creepy scenes, this brand new preview begins with a scene wherein Daniel Craig and his happy family move into their dream house. The fun quickly turns to horror when creepy things start happening to them.

To come out in Australian  cinemas on 06 October, "Dream House" follows Will Atenton, his wife Libby (Rachel Weisz) and their two girls who move into a home in New England. They soon find out that their new house was the murder scene of a mother and her children. The murderer was never found, but it was believed that they died at the hands of the husband.

As Will investigates further, he's not sure if he's starting to see ghosts or if the tragic story is just hitting too close to home. With the help of mysterious neighbour Ann Paterson (Naomi Watts), Will pieces together the haunting puzzle and races to find out who murdered the family in his dream house.
