“THE THING” 2011 TRAILER

Just days after revealing the first poster for The Thing, Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the imaginatively-titled prequel to director John Carpenter's 1982 movie of the same name.

Ultimately based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s 1938 novella Who Goes There?, the story involves a scientific team discovering an alien spacecraft and an extra-terrestrial frozen in ice. When the ice unexpectedly thaws, the team is in for a surprise when the alien revives and slowly begins assuming the body and personality of several team members. The story was originally adapted into the 1951 classic The Thing from Another World and remade by Carpenter 30 years later.

The Thing (the prequel) is also based on Carpenter's movie, which began with a Norwegian helicopter landing on an Antarctic base trying to kill a sled dog. An investigation into the Norwegian camp is made briefly, and the prequel fills in the events of what happened before Carpenter's movie. The trailer will feel very familiar to fans of Carpenter's movie, from the snowy setting to lines like, "someone is not who they say they are." Perhaps these similarities are why Universal decided to give the prequel the exact same title as its predecessor.
