GLEE & TIMBERLAKE

justin-timberlake

Could Glee be bringing "SexyBack" with a Justin Timberlake-themed episode? Following Madonna and Lady Gaga episodes, as well as an upcoming Britney Spears spot, Glee star Lea Michele hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that the show may have its sight set on the heartthrob's song catalogue. Michele believes a Timberlake episode would most likely happen when the show airs a post-Super Bowl episode early next year.

"I think they are saving Justin Timberlake for the Super Bowl episode," the actress said. "They have to be, because he is so perfect for our show." Michele then gushed about meeting Timberlake's girlfriend, actress Jessica Biel, and how she may have come on too strong. "When I met Jessica Biel, like a loser, I asked her to tell Justin to come on our show! She was a little taken aback and said, 'Um, OK. I'll tell him.'" Should a Timberlake episode not happen, Michele thinks the Super Bowl episode would again feature the songs of Madonna. "She has so many more amazing songs we didn't even touch."

As for music territory she hopes the show never covers? Michele would like to stay away from the 90s. "My problem is that songs get stuck in my head," she noted. "I probably wouldn't want to sing anything I liked when I was 12 years old—like the Spice Girls or Hanson."

Glee recently received 19 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series and a nod for Michele in the lead actress category. The second season is set to premiere on September 21 in the US.

THIS WORLD … FAMOUS MAUSOLEUMS

THIS WORLD …

MAUSOLEUMS

A mausoleum may seem like a grim attraction but as veteran globetrotters well know, there’s no place like a cemetery or burial landmark to spice up your trip. Even if you shun the mainstream practice of celebrity worship, lavish plots of the famous and infamous make for honest-to-goodness juicy tourist appeal. Here are some famous mausoleums in the world.

Grant’s Tomb,

New York City, U.S.A.

The-Most-Famous-Mausoleums-in-the-World-1 Grant’s Tomb, New York City, U.S.A.

The gravesite of one of the most popular Presidents in the history of the United States overlooks the Hudson River in Manhattan from a perch in Riverside Park. Built in 1897, Ulysses S. Grant’s mausoleum is purported to be the largest in North America.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum,

Hanoi, Vietnam

The-Most-Famous-Mausoleums-in-the-World-2

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hanoi, Vietnam

The most iconic leader Vietnam has ever had has a rather iconic mausoleum to honor his memory in Hanoi. A model of Lenin’s tomb in Moscow’s Red Square, the popular landmark has a touch of irony, in that it remains an enduring violation of Ho Chi Minh’s wish to have his ashes scattered throughout his beloved Vietnam.

Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb,

A U.S. National Historic Landmark, Lincoln’s Tomb in the capital of his home state, is a rather beautiful marble sarcophagus within a prodigious stone chamber, with many wonderful details to explore. The burial site sits on 51,000 m2 of land in idyllic Springfield, Illinois.

Suharto Family Complex,

Central Java, Indonesia

Known as Astana Giribangun, the mausoleum complex for the powerful Suharto family, a name familiar to anyone with even cursory knowledge of Indonesia, provides visitors to Central Java with yet another major attraction. In traditional island architecture, the mausoleum is near the Mangkunegaran Royal Cemetery complex.

A tremendous shrine to the second President of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon, within a national park in the city that bears his name, Quezon Memorial Circle took almost four decades to build before completion in 1979.

Tomb of Mausolus, Bodrum, Turkey

The tomb for the man who gave the world the term “mausoleum” was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Unfortunately, all that remains of the site in Bodrum, Turkey are stone ruins. Nonetheless, the once magnificent burial site for the former Persian Empire governor is still an inspiration to the present day.

Frogmore Estate,

Berkshire, England

The-Most-Famous-Mausoleums-in-the-World-7

Frogmore Estate, Berkshire, England

Adjacent to Windsor Castle in the county of Berkshire, just outside of London, Frogmore Estate contains two superb mausoleums. The grand Royal Mausoleum was made to intern Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, while the ornate Duchess of Kent mausoleum is the burial place of Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, mother of Queen Victoria. Both are architectural marvels.

Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor,

Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China

Perhaps the most indelible landmark in China, other than the Great Wall perhaps, the location of the famous Terracotta Army is the underground mausoleum of record in the world. The spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site, though well over two millennia old, was incredibly only found in 1974 by several humble farmers.

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia,

Ravenna, Italy

The-Most-Famous-Mausoleums-in-the-World-9 Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Ravenna, Italy

Home to more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than most nations, the town of Ravenna in Italy is a major tourist destination. A slice of authentic Old Europe, Ravenna has a mausoleum that experts at UNESCO consider to be “artistically perfect”. Though the burial site in the shape of a Latin cross has three sarcophagi, the most famous contains Galla Placidia herself, Empress consort of Constantius III, Western Roman Emperor for a short time in 421 AD.

Tomb of Jahangir,

Lahore, Pakistan

The-Most-Famous-Mausoleums-in-the-World-10 Tomb of Jahangir, Lahore, Pakistan

A remarkable burial complex for the popular Mughal Emperor of the early 17th century, the only words to describe this gorgeous Lahore landmark are “dramatic” and “grandiose”.

10 THINGS ABOUT

“THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN”

The Bridge at Remagen – 1969 - As the Allied armies close in, the Nazis decide to blow up the last Rhine bridge, trapping their own men on the wrong side. But will it happen?

the-bridge-at-remagen-movie-poster-1020463682

1.    Filming in Czechoslovakia was interrupted by the Soviet invasion of August 1968. Cast and crew were taken to safety in a convoy of 28 taxis, except for Robert Logan, who stayed behind with film gear in order to capture the invasion on film and photo. The movie was completed in Italy and Austria. After their daring escape from Czechoslovakia filming was resumed near Hamburg, Germany and near the Pope's summer house, Castelgondolfo, Italy

2.    At a cost of $250,000, the movie company, United Artists, blasted a tunnel on the east side of the river Vltava in the town of Davle, Czech Republic.

3.    Because of the heavy river traffic of coal barges, tourist boats and other ships, the Germans did not allow United artists and David Wolper to make the movie at Remagen.

4.    The producers were granted the right to blow up large parts of the town of Most, but they decided not to blow up the local communist party headquarters building, in order not to cause trouble with the Russians who were already preparing to invade Czechoslovakia during the filming in 1968.

5.    One of the first films to be shot behind the Iron Curtain. Czechoslovakia was seen by Russia as becoming too liberal in its values. In attempting to justify the forthcoming invasion by the USSR, Soviet agents spread the rumour that the American soldiers were real. Actually most of them were played by Czech students. Pictures of stored movie props were published as "proofs" of weapons shipments from the United States to arm local "reactionaries". It was even reported that American tanks were rolling through the streets and occupying the towns.

the-bridge-at-remagen-movie-poster-1020393697

6.    This movie's closing epilogue states that on 17 March 1945, ten days after its capture, the battle bridge at Remagen collapsed into the Rhine River. This was due to excessive bombing by the German enemy.

7.    The specific Bridge at Remagen which is this film's title, The Bridge at Remagen (1969), is actually the bridge known as Ludendorff Bridge as in the movie and in real life. The bridge was frequently known as the Bridge at Remagen during World War II. It was a railway bridge that ran across the River Rhine at Remagen in Germany. The bridge connected the town of Remagen with the town of Erpel, situated between two ridge lines of hills which flanked the Rhine River. In 1945, during the Second War War, the Allies captured the Ludendorff Bridge between March 7 and March 8 of that year. Today, the remaining towers of the bridge house a museum.

THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN

8.    The Bridge at Remagen aka Ludendorff Bridge can also be seen portrayed in the video-games Call of Duty: Finest Hour (2004) (VG) and "Panzer Front".

9.    According to the book The United Artists Story by Ronald Bergan, "The Bridge at Remagen was the last bridge standing over the Rhine [River] in 1945, which both German and American forces fought to control."

10.    Peter van Eyck's last completed movie before his death.

HITCHCOCK

alfred_hitchcock

There isn't a person on Earth that would deny that Alfred Hitchcock is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. You don't earn the title "Master Of Suspense" without making a few great films. Before Hitchcock directed Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window and North By Northwest, he was a silent film director. The prints of some of his earliest work are slowly decaying with time and are in desperate need of restoration.

The BFI National Archive is currently accepting donations from those willing to put money towards saving the remaining Hitchcock silent films. Asking people to "Rescue the Hitchcock 9," the films in question are The Pleasure Garden, The Lodger, The Ring, Downhill, Easy Virtue, The Farmers Wife, Champagne, The Manxman and Blackmail.

Most mainstream moviegoers likely have never heard of any of these titles, but hopefully the name Alfred Hitchcock does mean something to them. These films may not even be on par with the film's of Hitchcock's greatest years, but they are still an important part of film history. There is no minimum donation, and while restoration is a expensive task, most will agree that the work of Hitchcock is worth it.

Head over to The BFI National Archive to see how you can help.

FRASER OHARE

Brendan Fraser, known to movie fans for his starring role in The Mummy and comedies such as Dudley Do-Right, will make his Broadway debut this fall alongside Tony winner Denis O’Hare (Assassins, Take Me Out, Sweet Charity, TV's True Blood) in Simon Bent’s Elling, according to the New York Post.

Comic actress Jennifer Coolidge (Best in Show; Broadway’s The Women) will co-star in the play, which the Post says is headed to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and will be directed by Tony winner Doug Hughes.

Adapted from a Norwegian novel and film, Elling was produced in London in 2007. O’Hare will play the title character, who makes friends with Kjell (Fraser) when both are in a mental hospital. Elling suffers from acute anxiety after his mother’s death, while Fraser is a childlike 40-year-old eager to lose his virginity. The two become roommates and face the challenge of establishing a normal life when released from the institution. Coolidge has been cast as Fraser’s girlfriend.

Things appear to be quite fun on the set of the upcoming remake of Arthur. Starring Russell Brand as the title character, we've already seen the actor messing around with a Back To The Future-style DeLorean, and dressing up as Batman, and the Batman Forever Batmobile was spotted on set.

What else can on-set photos from the movie deliver?

How about Helen Mirren giving Brand a bath?

Brand recently posted a picture to his Twitter account of the 65-year-old Oscar winner reaching into a bathtub containing bubbles, water, and his half-naked self. The look on both their faces is worthy of nightmares and you can probably thank whatever deity you believe in that a) Brand had the decency to wear a Speedo and b) that the picture isn't a higher resolution.

FRIDAY THE 13TH

Friday the 13th – 1980 - Camp counsellors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to re-open a summer camp that was the site of a child's drowning.

Friday the 13th   was released in Australia on Thursday12 June 1980 – with Friday 13th being the next day!

1.    Body count: 10.

2.    Sally Field auditioned for the role of Alice Hardy.

3.    The film has been spoofed a number of times, most notably in Saturday the 14th (1981)

4.    One critic was so angry at Betsy Palmer's role in the movie (which had angered many of her fans), that he published her address in his magazine, and encouraged people to write her and protest her. He published the wrong address.

5.    The movie was filmed at Camp Nobebosco in New Jersey. The camp is still in operation to date, and they have a wall of Friday the 13th paraphernalia to honor the fact that the movie was set there.

6.    Tom Savini was one of the first crew members on board for the film because the producers idolized his special makeup effects in Dawn of the Dead (1978).

7.    The filmmakers never intended to make this the launching pad for the series that followed. According to Victor Miller, Jason was only meant as a plot device and not intended to continue on his mother's grisly work.

8.    While most of the cast and crew stayed at local hotels during the filming, some of the loyal cast and crew members, including Tom Savini, and Taso N. Stavrakis, stayed at the actual camp site. They had Savini's Betamax VCR and only a couple of movies (Barbarella (1968) and Marathon Man (1976)) on videotape to keep themselves entertained, so each night they would watch one of these movies. To this day, Savini says he can recite those movies by heart.

9.    Filming lasted 28 days and made $39,754,601 and had a budget of $550,000.

Firday 1 edit

10.    Willie Adams was a crew member for the film. Although he spent most his time working behind the camera, he played the male counsellor in the 1958 scene, and holds the unique distinction of being the first murder victim in the Friday the 13th film series.

11.    Betsy Palmer worked on the film for ten days, for which she received $1000 per day.

12.    Victor Miller had originally given Jason the name of Josh. After deciding that it sounded too nice, he changed it to Jason after a school bully.

Friday Palmer

13.    Victor Miller's working title for the script was "Long Night at Camp Blood".

14.    During the first few weekends of the film's release, makeup/effects artist Tom Savini would go into theaters for the last five minutes of the show to see the audience react to Jason emerging from the lake and grabbing Alice.

15.    Kevin Bacon's character, lying in bed with his throat impaled by an arrow, has the blood in his neck making little bubbles. Originally, it was just meant to seep out, but the arrangement of the tube with blood didn't work, and Tom Savini ended up blowing into the tube to make it flow, causing an unintended (but ultimately used) bubbling effect.

1.    Steve McQueen and Audrey Hepburn were originally cast to play Major Julian Cook and Kate Ter Horst respectively. But they were dropped when Hepburn's asking salary price was too high, and McQueen only wanted to appear in starring roles, not all-star assembled projects.

2.    According to the DVD version, Gen. R.E. Urquhart had no idea who Sean Connery was or why his daughters were so excited that he had been chosen to play their father in the movie. Richard Attenborough picked Connery because of his strong resemblance to the younger Urqhart.

3.    Film critics derided producer Joseph E. Levine for casting a then 36-year-old Ryan O'Neal to play an army general. But in reality, Brig. Gen. James M. Gavin was only 37 years old at the time of the battle. In fact, shortly after this battle, Gavin was promoted to major general and at 37 was the youngest man ever to hold that rank.

4.    Over 2.7 million feet of film were shot.

5.    Originally, Richard Attenborough did not want to direct this picture, as he was keen to make Gandhi (1982) after Young Winston (1972). However, major studios were reluctant to finance the picture, so he sought producer Joseph E. Levine for financing. This film was part of the agreement in exchange for financing "Gandhi".

6.    The Para playing his flute during a lull was playing the third movement from the Brandenburg Concerto #6 (BWV1051), written by Johann Sebastian Bach.

7.    Due to permissions and budgetary constraints the movie was not shot in Arnhem but in Deventer, which lies 35KM up north. The sceneries and the bridge however are very much look alike compared to Arnhem.

8.    According to his recent memoir Roger Moore was offered the role of Brian Horrocks. He was forced to decline due to a scheduling conflict with The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) but became available again when the Bond movie was delayed. However Horrocks had approval over the character and turned Moore down, and the role instead went to Edward Fox.

9.    Sean Connery plays a private in The Longest Day (1962) and a Major General in A Bridge Too Far (1977). All these fictional promotions would have occurred in the 3 1/2 months between the actual events.

10.    Charles Bronson was seriously considered for General Sosabowski with Robert Redford receiving a reported $2m for a total of 2 week's work on this production.
