MOVIE REVIEW ...

THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP

the-special-relationship-movie-poster-1020548766 The ‘special relationship’ is a term first coined by Winston Churchill to describe Britain’s close ties with America.  Exchanging social and political ideas, the currency they provided would become mutually beneficial.  It could also bring some associated problems. The Special Relationship highlights how two leader’s growing friendship was put to the test on the world stage.

The Special Relationship 1 One of the first heads of state newly installed British Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) meets is American President Bill Clinton (Dennis Quaid).  Similar in political ideals and married to strong women, they find much in common.  As the years progress with various events place pressure on their leaderships, the support network each other provides become crucial.  When the tide of opinion sways between them, their pragmatism and loyalty is laid bare in an often tough but rewarding alliance.

The Special Relationship 2

A mostly engrossing study in the forging of a powerful union, The Special Relationship brings fresh insight into a charismatic duo.  A fascinating contrast is given in their differing approaches in solving common problems.  Blair’s optimism of fresh incumbency parlayed his actions whilst Clinton’s second term agenda was driven in ensuring he left behind a lasting legacy.  Famed for their persuasive abilities, their choices defined both.  Watching these events with the benefit of hindsight proves enlightening – particularly in Blair’s case – as his personal convictions became sorely stretched under Clinton’s successor.

The Special Relationship 3 Even though the cast ensure they inhabit their roles rather than portraying sketchy impersonations, the story falters in its skewed objectivity.  Despite truth always being discarded when a good story can be told, Peter Morgan’s script occasionally strains credibility.  This is very noticeable in his depiction of Blair, who almost comes across as a virtuous saint-like person.  He has no such qualms showing Clinton’s personal foibles which seems unfair and undermines an otherwise interesting trawl through an important era in recent history.

The Special Relationship 4

The Special Relationship may provide a superficial insight into two complicated men, but its presented facts maintain interest.  As a look at the U.S./British alliance in the last years of the 20th Century, it gives a reasonable picture of the different reputations both gained from their international collaborations.
