TRIVIA BITS ... OTTOMAN EMPIRE

 

In Leo Tolstoy’s time, the Ottman Empire was widely known as ‘the sick man of Europe’. Centred on modern-day Turkey, the empire was regarded as crucial because it controlled the Bosporus Straits at Constantinople. Without a warm-water port in the Black Sea and access to the Straits, the Russian navy was effectively trapped.
