IT’S NOW … OCTOBER

IT’S NOW…

OCTOBER

October is the tenth month of the Gregorian calendar and one of the seven months with 31 days. In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn leaves have fallen and living things prepare to hide away for winter. It is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, spring is unfolding.

Originally the eighth month of the year, October gets it name from the Latin and Greek octo meaning “eight”.

BIRTH FLOWER

Marigold or calendula is the birth flower for October. Its Latin meaning is “throughout the months”. It signifies grief and jealousy, and has many medicinal purposes due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Called Mary’s Gold by early Christians, the flower was associated with the Virgin Mary and put around her statues as offerings.

BIRTHSTONE

Pink tourmaline and beryl are associated with this month. The modern October birthstone is opal. Beryl is unremarkable except in its green form – emerald – and its blue form – aquamarine. The name opal comes from the Latin opalus for precious stone. Its chemical makeup is similar to quartz but with pockets or spheres filled with water. This creates the beautiful, multi-coloured light-refractive properties of opals.
