The League of Nations involved 57 countries at its peak. It was created in an attempt to prevent another conflict as terrible as World War I. The United States never joined and other countries such as Germany, Japan, Italy, and the USSR were only temporarily members. Its credibility was destroyed by it s failure to prevent or adequately sanction the Japanese massacre at Shanghai in 1932 and Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia in 1935.
