Movie Review ... R.I.P.D.

ripd-poster02Based on a comic book series, ‘R.I.P.D.’ shares more than a few similarities with the ‘Men in Black’ franchise.  Full of weird creatures, mind-boggling gadgets and a fiery lead duo, it has an air of familiarity.  One couldn’t blame the producers for copying that money-making template.  Unfortunately they fail in adding anything new with ‘R.I.P.D.’ becoming a faint spectre of those Will Smith-starring films.

When Detective Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) is killed during a shoot-out, his spirit ascends towards the pearly gates.  Upon arrival he is enlisted in Heaven’s Rest In Peace Department (R.I.P.D.) Tasked with patrolling the afterlife and capturing spirits who refuse to cross over, he is teamed with feisty U.S. Marshal Roy (Jeff Bridges).  Together they try to bring some order to a world riddled with spectral beasties.

As a slice of mindless entertainment, ‘R.I.P.D.’ is reasonably enjoyable.  Those who haven’t seen similar movies may like it even more.  Unfortunately those who have may find much that is familiar.  This is where ‘R.I.P.D.’ fails as it never generates its own identity.  Its script feels like a tired re-hash of what has come before with little flair or imagination.  The fact that it has become one of the year’s biggest box office flops says something about audience’s refusal to view a pale imitator.

Blame certainly couldn’t be placed on Reynolds or Bridges performances.  They bring much needed energy and seem to enjoy their character’s snippy partnership.  Bridges in particular has a lot of fun again proving his thespian versatility.  Their efforts are assisted by some great CGI and creative action sequences. It’s a shame these elements are based around an oft-used story.

‘R.I.P.D.’ is a very perfunctory effort mainly aimed at ‘Men in Black’ fans.  It has few original ideas with only those having not seen such a film sure to be satisfied.'
