Movie Review ... Warm Bodies

warm-bodies-movie-poster‘Warm Bodies’ features slow-shuffling and grunting zombies by the dozen.  Matched with a romance between two star-crossed youngsters and you’d think this was yet another ‘Twilight’ knock-off.  Happily ‘Warm Bodies’ turns such thoughts on its head.  Based on Isaac Marion’s novel, it brings a fresh take with the clichéd elements given more life than the un-dead inhabiting its story.

R (Nicholas Hoult) has become a zombie after a severe cataclysm.  Roaming the land feasting on living flesh each morsel makes him feel ‘alive’.  After killing her boyfriend, R meets Julie (Teresa Palmer) a normal soul living in an abnormal world.  Gaining the memories of her dead partner after eating his brain, R exhibits more human traits.  Beginning a romance, they stand defiant against those wanting to eradicate the zombie scourge forever.

Directed with flair by Jonathan Levine, ‘Warm Bodies’ spins a new twist to an often stagnant genre.  Almost the reverse of the standard ‘zombies bring plague to humanity’ riff, our knowledge of what usually happens is shaken.  The unexpected relationship between R and Julie mirrors the script’s ‘anything can happen’ quality as R slowly fights his way back from physical abyss.  Despite the peculiar tale, it works due to the excellent performers who bring emotional authenticity to their characters’ outlandish situation.

Another pleasing aspect is the deft blending of mood mixing drama, action, horror, humour and romance. This blancmange of styles perfectly forms something unique.  These help in creating the zombie-ravaged world allowing for full engagement in the daily routines of the characters.  Coupled with an engaging soundtrack and striking cinematography, this becomes a ghoulishly enticing package.

Unafraid in establishing new genre boundaries, ‘Warm Bodies’ is worth checking out.  With other works such as ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘The Walking Dead’ also creating fresh zombie-filled horizons, the genre has been given a new life-line to ensure the dead will forever haunt our screens.
