Movie Review ... Rush

rush posterMovies featuring racing cars are usually difficult to produce.  Although the excitement level of the race is there, the cars move so fast they usually resemble toys.  This decreases the believability of a story where continual engagement is paramount.  Fortunately director Ron Howard realised this when making ‘Rush’.  Full of the tension one expects from a race, its human drama is often more gripping than what is found track-side.

In 1976 Formula One driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) survived a near-fatal crash.  Determined to re-build his winning reputation, he entered the prestigious World Championships in Fuji. There he faced rival James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth).  Both had much at stake with each man eager to obtain a winning margin across the finish line.

‘Rush’ is two films in one.  Essentially a biography of two men, the split narrative provides a good understanding of what drove them.  Hunt’s arrogant demeanour masked someone unsure of their skills.  Lauda’s focussed zeal also masked his insecurities. Their passion for the sport bound them together.  Intense rivals, they respected each other’s abilities and determination.  Howard successfully conveys these elements whilst providing the requisite energy needed in the race sequences.

It’s these racing scenes which aid in building the emotional fulcrum holding events together.  Excitingly staged but never over-long, they highlight the constant danger the drivers faced.  Weather, faulty vehicles and enormous egos all played a part in creating the maelstrom in which they participated.  Whilst some CGI may have been used, the sense of realism mirrored the character’s relationships.

Although dramatic licence may have been used to make the story interesting ‘Rush’ is still an engrossing film.  Ron Howard’s works have often been hit and miss with ‘Rush’ sitting squarely in the latter.
