The first machine gun was invented during the U.S. Civil War by Richard Jordan Gattling.
It was not adopted until the war was over. It was called the Gattling Gun, a phrase that has gone out of fashion.
However the term “gat” is often used for a gun and is derived from Gattling’s name.
