OTTO PREMINGER
During the filming of Saint Joan (1957), Otto Preminger – who had a reputation as something of a tyrant – is said to have been particularly hard on the film's young star – Jean Seberg.
While the actress was chained to a post atop a pile of wood in preparation for the execution scene, the flames that were intended to suggest her burning at the stake shot higher than planned. The actually began to scorch Jean Seberg.
Ignoring protests from cast and crew, Preminger reportedly refused to let Seberg be rescued until he had the shot he wanted.
