The most influential shrine in the city of Rome was the Temple of Jupiter dedicated to Iuppiter Optimus Maximus – the ‘best and greatest’ of the gods. Jupiter was also called Jove by the Romans – hence the phrase ‘by Jove’. It is from Jove that we derive the word jovial, meaning merry or good spirited.
