ARETHA FRANKLIN’S “RESPECT”

Part of the bridge in Aretha Franklin's 1967 version of Respect (Atlantic 2403) was taken from Sam and Dave's 1966 recording when Something is wrong with My Baby (Stax 210).

A few lines of the song Respect can be heard being sung by a prisoner in the 1980 movie Brubaker, and later by a nun (played by Maureen McGovern) in the 1981 movie Airplane!

The slang expression "sock-it-to-me" originated on Aretha Franklin’s version of Respect.

Otis Redding sang Respect in the 1969 movie Popcorn: An Audio/Visual Rock Thing, and Aretha sang Respect in the 1979 movie More American Graffiti.
