Marilyn Monroe's diamond-encrusted wedding band from Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio is set to go up for auction, Profiles in History's auctions announced.

DiMaggio gave Monroe the platinum ring, with 35 baguette-cut diamonds, at their wedding on January 14, 1954. It was the second marriage for both.

The bijou, that is now missing one diamond, is estimated to sell for between $US300,000 ($307,000) to $US500,000 ($511,000) at the auction, set for December 15-17.

A nude painting of Monroe, signed by the artist, Earl Moran, will also be auctioned and is expected to fetch $US70,000 to $US90,000.

The Monroe-DiMaggio union lasted barely a year, with biographers describing the romance as tumultuous and filled with violence.

The actress then married playwright Arthur Miller but when her third marriage ended in 1961, she rekindled her relationship with the baseball star.

DiMaggio even planned to ask Monroe to remarry him before her apparent suicide from a drug overdose in 1962, according to historians.

After Monroe's death at age 36, DiMaggio claimed her body and arranged her funeral.

In the two decades following her death, DiMaggio remembered the late actress by having roses delivered to her crypt three times a week.

DiMaggio died at age 84 in 1999.
