TRIVIA BITS ... SOCCER

About three thousand years ago, the Olmec people of Mesoamerica played a ball game that was passed onto the Aztecs and the Mayan people and still exists today in a form known as ‘ulama’. Originally played in a stone-built enclosure of which several still exist throughout Mexico. The game involves keeping a heavy solid rubber ball in play using just your hips with players girding themselves with a wide leather belt to reduce bruising. In the Aztec version, players tried to pass the ball through a stone circle on the wall. It is thought that members of the losing team were sacrificed to the gods.
