MOVIE REVIEW .... BATTLESHIP

1209battleshipWhen is a Transformers movie not a Transformers movie? When it’s ‘Battleship’, the latest from the same company making those robotic heroes come to life.  You’d be forgiven thinking you were watching ‘Transformers 4’ as ‘Battleship’ has an air of familiarity.  Set amongst the waves of the great ocean, the battle between robots and humans rages on with this pure popcorn flick serving the CGI with excessive aplomb.

Part of an elite naval fleet, Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is always ready for battle.  Serving under the command of Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), Alex’s skills are always put to the test.  When his crew discover an alien space-craft in the ocean, his abilities are stretched to the limit.  Fighting an alien menace intent on building an oceanic power source, Alex and his comrades prepare to defeat their opponents by any means necessary.

Noisy and gargantuan in scope ‘Battleship’ is hardly subtle.  Unlike similar films, it entertains with some great action and characters you care for.  Whilst some are painted in broad comic strip strokes, their use of tactical strategy in defeating enemies at least gives them a modicum of intelligence.  Being set in the American Navy it’s all very ‘gung-ho/Top Gun’ in tone but if you ignore that much enjoyment should surface.

Convincingly portraying a hot-headed officer slowly assuming leadership, Kitsch equips himself admirably.  His performance is complimented by the CGI and a story cleverly utilising the original board game’s concept into its narrative. Pleasingly the effects are up to scratch with the villain’s appearance adding to the general tension.  Director Peter Berg effectively conjures the excitement having a grand time showing the many fierce battles between human and alien.

‘Battleship’ isn’t the type of movie engaging the mind, which occasionally isn’t a bad thing.  Silly and predictable but very entertaining it should please those looking for the latest robotic smash up as only a blockbuster provides
.
