This hotel in a restored late-19th-century villa has an unlikely location—the workaday hilltop village of Bernalda, in the arch of Italy's boot. But Bernalda is also the hometown of director Francis Ford Coppola, who thought it the perfect site for his most recent luxury inn.
While celebrity pedigree may be part of the draw, the nine-room hotel can easily stand on its own in terms of appeal. French talent Jacques Grange and members of Mr. Coppola's family created the sophisticated yet warm décor. The hotel features stone arches, colourful tiled floors, a grand salon that turns into a cinema in the evenings and bath products from cult brand Santa Maria Novella.
A large walled garden shields a swimming pool with private cabanas.
Should guests want a beachier experience, Palazzo Margherita offers shuttle service to the white-sand shores of the Ionian Sea, 20 minutes away.
The surrounding countryside, which was settled by the Greeks before the Roman era, is part of the Hellenic Magna Graecia—the coastal areas of Southern Italy—where the thriving local agriculture produces sumptuous fruits and vegetables, as well as the Aglianico grapes used to make wines of the same name. Nestled between the ancient cities of Metapontum and Matera, the area is rich with history, including haunting primordial cave dwellings called Sassi di Matera (meaning "stones of Matera"), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
